About
Christian Oertel was born in Plauen. From 2000 to 2008 he studied medieval history, ancient history and philosophy at the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena (Magister Artium). From 2008 to 2014, he was a doctoral candidate at FSU Jena and graduated with a study on the cult of St Erik in medieval Sweden focussing on the political use of the saint’s prestige. From 2014 to 2021 he completed two postdoctoral projects on the Bohemian and Roman King Wenceslas IV: one on his historiographical afterlife (Fritz Thyssen Foundation) and another on his ruling practice (DFG).
Christian Oertel has been a researcher in the GWZO’s department »Humans and Environment« since 2022.

Christian Oertel has taught courses at the Department of History of the FSU Jena (2009/2010) and from 2016 to 2020 at the Department of History of the University of Erfurt.
