Prof. Dr. ret. Stefan Troebst
About
Stefan Troebst studied history, Slavic studies, Balkan studies, political science and Islamic studies at the Free University of Berlin and at universities of Tübingen, Sofia (Bulgaria), Skopje (Yugoslavia, now Macedonia), as well as at Indiana University in Bloomington (U.S.A.). He earned his doctorate with a study entitled »Mussolini, Macedonia and the Powers 1922-1930. The ›Inner Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation‹ in the Southeast European Policy of Fascist Italy«. He worked as a research assistant and university assistant for contemporary Eastern European history at the Institute for Eastern European Studies at the Free University of Berlin and held a postdoctoral research fellowship from the German Research Foundation.
His habilitation, »Trade Control – ›Derivation‹ – Containment: Swedish Policy towards Moscow 1617-1661«, was published in Wiesbaden in 1997. After serving as Interim Professor of Modern History at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg and receiving a Heisenberg Fellowship from the DFG, he was named Professor of Cultural Studies of East Central Europe at the Faculty of Philology at Leipzig University in 1999. Since 2015, he has been Professor of Cultural History of Eastern Europe at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the same university. He is head of the Master's programme European Studies at the Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) at the University of Leipzig.
From 1999 to 2021, Stefan Troebst was Deputy Director of the GWZO.

- German member of the long-term missions of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) in Macedonia and Moldova on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office
