For the new Prague-based »Knowledge and Participation« Department (headed by Dr. Michal Frankl), we are looking to recruit, as of 1 September 2025, a total of four researchers: 

two doctoral researchers (m/f/d): 

These two positions are initially for a fixed term of three years. The institute’s personnel development plan allocates four years for internally financed doctoral positions. The fourth year is budgeted and will be granted, provided that previously defined milestones have been met. 

two postdoctoral researchers (m/f/d): 

These two positions are initially for a fixed term of four years. Subject to a positive evaluation and if budgetary conditions permit, they can be made permanent.

Das GWZO ist Einsatzstelle für den Freiwilligendienst Kultur und Bildung. Der neue Freiwilligendienst startet am 1. September 2025.

Bewerbungen sind vom 1.2. bis zum 15.3.2025 möglich.

Sie können am GWZO den Alltag an einem großen Forschungsinstitut zur Geschichte und Kultur des östlichen Europa kennen lernen und mitgestalten.

Ihre Aufgaben:

• Sie bearbeiten z.B. Bilder und Texte für eine analoge oder digitale Ausstellung und entwickeln digitale Formate zur Wissenschaftsvermittlung mit;
• Sie entwickeln Lehrmaterialien zur Geschichte des östlichen Europa mit;
• Sie suchen in Bibliotheken nach Büchern und in Archiven und im Internet nach Quellen;
• Sie lernen die Arbeit an einer Forschungsbibliothek kennen, tragen zu Forschung, Publikationen und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit des Instituts bei;
• Sie unterstützen die Organisation von Vorträgen, Konferenzen und/oder Universitätsseminaren;
• Sie betreuen unsere Gäste aus der Ukraine oder anderen Ländern mit und beteiligen sich an der Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Partnerinstitutionen.

The GWZO has been awarding scholarships to doctoral candidates, post-docs and senior researchers since 2021. Applications are due by 30 April of each year.

With the special scholarship »Ukraine« we aim to support refugee scientists from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The GWZO's visting scholars programme enables the institute to invite academics to Leipzig for short stays, prioritising applicants from Eastern European countries.
