Leipzig Science Cinema: Film Meets Research

The Leipzig Science Cinema brings the latest research to the big screen: at regular intervals, Leipzig’s scientific institutions – including the GWZO – host public film screenings followed by discussions at the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum.

Whether feature films, TV series or documentaries: many films deal with key social and historical issues. But where does fiction end and reality begin? At the Science Cinema, you have the opportunity to discuss precisely these questions directly with experts from the scientific community immediately after the screening.

The series of events is organised by the City of Leipzig (Knowledge Policy Unit) in cooperation with the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum and takes place in partnership with the Leipzig Science Network (LSN).

  • Venue: Hall of the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig (3rd floor)
  • Frequency: Four events a year (on Tuesdays)
  • Admission: Free
  • You can find the latest dates on the City of Leipzig’s website.

»Der Tierstimmensammler oder Das Lied der scheuen Stockente« (German, no subtitles)
With Liza Walther (GWZO and Oseredok Leipzig e. V.) and Timm Schönfelder (GWZO)
In cooperation with the City of Leipzig’s Knowledge Policy Unit, the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum and Oseredok Leipzig e. V.

The award-winning Ukrainian road movie »Der Tierstimmensammler oder Das Lied der Scheuen Stockente« (original title: »Moji dumky tychi«) centres on a quirky mother-son journey full of tragicomedy and quiet moments. A Canadian video game producer offers Vadym, a sound designer from Kyiv who stands over two metres tall but is rather insecure, the chance of a lifetime: he is to record animal sounds in Transcarpathia. If he succeeds in capturing the rare song of the shy mallard, a special bonus and a permanent position in Canada await him. As Vadym cannot drive, he sets off on the journey with his mother Halyna, a taxi driver. What begins as a partnership of convenience turns into an emotional ordeal

Filmed before Russia’s war of aggression, the film now prompts a shift in perspective: what image of Ukraine does this film convey in the year it was made, 2019 – and how do people in Leipzig view a country today that has been ravaged by Russian attacks since 2022? How is the ongoing war altering their perceptions, and what consequences does the destruction have not only for people and cities, but also for natural environments, art and cultural heritage? Following the film, historian Dr Timm Schönfelder (GWZO) and historian Liza Walther (GWZO and Oseredok Leipzig e. V.) will explore these questions and engage in a discussion with the audience.
