About

Dorothee Riese has a B.A. in International Literatures and Slavic Studies (2013) from University of Tübingen, an MA in the History and Culture of Central and Eastern Europe (2018) from European University Viadrina Frankfurt an der Oder and an MA in Literary Writing (2021) from German Institute for Literature of Leipzig University. She has studied abroad in Moscow, Barnaul and Saint Petersburg. From 2018 to 2020, she was a trainee at the Buchenwald Memorial in Weimar. 

Her debut novel, »Wir sind hier für die Stille«, was published by Berlin Verlag in 2024 and deals with recent Romanian history and culture. 

From 2022 to 2025, she served as Assistant to the Director at GWZO, and from 2024 to 2025, she was Coordinator of the Leibniz Research Network for Central and Eastern Europe. Dorothee Riese has been a researcher at the GWZO since April 2025.

The participatory project builds on the widespread interest in autobiographical writing to open up new perspectives on life during the period of upheaval that followed 1989. To this end, writers and writing teachers are offering creative writing courses at various locations across eastern Germany.
