Dr. Joanna Rogóż

About
Joanna Rogóż was born in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland. She graduated from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. In 2008, she obtained her master’s degree in biology and in the field of anthropology. In 2013, she obtained her doctoral degree in the field of biological sciences with a doctoral dissertation entitled »Temporal bone morphology as a determinant of sex in humans«. Since 2013, Joanna Rogóż has been Assistant Professor at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Rzeszow, Rzeszow, Poland, with a research and teaching position.
As a physical anthropologist, she analyses human skeletal remains from the Neolithic period to the present in close collaboration with archaeologists. She is the author of several dozen anthropological studies and regularly participates at archaeological excavations. Among other things, she also performs expert opinions as a court expert, including some in cooperation with the Institute of National Remembrance.
Since October 2025, Joanna Rogóż is the holder of an 18-month Alexander von Humboldt Scholarship at the GWZO.

Current topic of research
EXCLUDED/EXPOSED – The Exhumation of Marginalised Groups
Adopting a broad perspective on violence in the 20th century and discussing the opportunities and challenges of violence archaeology are very important tasks. To this end, this research integrates insights from archaeology (also so-called political exhumations), physical anthropology, history and memory studies.
