Niklas Amerongen studied history, philosophy and sociology in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Paris. From 2024 to 2026, he worked as a research assistant at the POLY Research Group »Polycentricity and Plurality of Premodern Christianities«, housed at Goethe-University Frankfurt.
Since May 2026, Niklas Amerongen has been a doctoral candidate at the GWZO, working as a researcher on the project »A Novel Understanding of Pandemic Disease in Preindustrial Europe (1300-1800): Combining History, Machine Learning and Natural Sciences (EUROpest)«, funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

The Plague in Rural Areas of Northern Italy
The project examines the epidemiological course and the social dynamics of plague epidemics in rural northern Italy. In doing so, it explores questions of mobility, identity construction and the definition of spatial boundaries.
