Violence and Humanitarianism

How does our understanding of the 20th century change when we view it from the perspective of the history of the Armenian genocide and its consequences? This research strand explores how the history of violence of the past century can be retold by placing the diverse activities of the Armenian diaspora in the spotlight – both in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and internationally. To this end, we shed light on previously little-known aspects of the aftermath of this violence, focusing on local sites of humanitarian emergency aid, the cross-border networks and international humanitarianism. This research strand also engages with cultural and literary debates surrounding these efforts. In this way, it contributes to a nuanced understanding of the history of violence in the 20th century, including the perception and artistic representation of this violence and the history of international humanitarianism, from an Armenian-Eastern European perspective – and highlights how closely local experiences, diasporic dynamics, and transnational and international developments are intertwined.
