Prof. Dr. Frank Hadler

Frank Hadler is head of the department »Entanglements and Globalisation« at the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern (GWZO) and honorary professor for the cultural history of East Central Europe at the University of Leipzig (Germany). He received his PhD in 1984 from the University of Brno (Czechoslovakia) on Počátky moravské historiografie do konce 19. století [The Beginnings of Moravian Historiography up to the end of the 19th century] and got his Dr. Phil. from the Institute for General History at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin on Die Anfänge der tschechoslowakischen Außenpolitik 1914-1919. He held posts as junior and senior researcher at institutes in Berlin and Leipzig and fellowships in Washington D.C., Oxford and Paris; he lectured at the Humboldt University of Berlin, Berlin’s Free University and Paris IV. Since 1994, he has been teaching at Leipzig University. Guest professorships and researcher positions brought him to New York City (Columbia University), Prague, Warsaw, Bratislava and Budapest (Historical Institutes of the Academies of Sciences). 

Hadler’s main fields of research and publication are the transnational history of East Central Europe, the history of historiography and the history of globalisation processes in the 19th and 20th century. Since 2010, he has been General Secretary of the Commission Internationale des Etudes Historiques Slaves (CIEHS) affiliated to the CISH. From 2017 to 2024, he acted as chair of the German section of the trilateral German-Czech-Slovak Commission of Historians. He has long-standing experience of refereeing major grant proposals for funding bodies and programmes such as the ERC as well as national Research Councils in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Between 2003 and 2008, he was a project lead of the European Science Foundation (ESF) programme Representations of the Past: The Writing of National Histories in Europe (NHIST).
