About
Wenjie Zhou studied Environmental Policy, Modern China Studies and Political Economy in Kunshan, Durham and San Diego. He obtained his B.A. in Environmental Policy from Duke Kunshan University in 2022, and his MCEPA (Master of Chinese Economic and Political Affairs) from the University of California, San Diego, in 2024. During his master’s studies, he concentrated on Chinese industrial policies and economic development after the Reform and Opening.
Wenjie Zhou is a doctoral candidate at the GWZO working as a researcher on the DFG Weave project »Bloc–Building and (Dis-)Continuity: Cross-border Connections and the Transformations in Industrial Enterprises in East Central Europe and China, 1945-1960«.

This project revisits the origins of China’s automobile industry by examining pre-socialist car manufacturing workshops in Shanghai. It highlights continuities in expertise and production practices that shaped the early PRC vehicle sector.
